The MCAD is a certification that demonstrates that the owner has the skills that are necessary to design, build and maintain applications written using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and/or web applications using the Microsoft .NET framework 1.0 and/or the Microsoft .NET framework 1.1.

MCAD is designed for users that design, code, test and maintain .NET framework 1.0 and/or .NET framework 1.1 code. It was designed to provide the initial development certification and allow a continuation path to more advanced credentials such as the Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD). The MCAD is for individuals working at the coding level as opposed to the full solution level.

To become certified as a Microsoft Certified Application Developer, the individual must pass two core exams (one application development, one web services components) and one elective exam.
